Pharyngitis, or sore throat, can be caused by several things including exposure to dry air, smoking, acid reflux or viral infections such as the flu or common cold.
Thankfully, there are natural remedies that may provide temporary relief without the need for an antibiotic. But before trying them out, be sure to consult your doctor first.
Sage
Sage is an easy-to-grow and maintain perennial plant for home gardens. It’s drought tolerant and loves bright light, making it a great houseplant that can stay green year round.
For centuries, this herb has been used to treat a variety of illnesses, such as fevers and sore throats. It possesses antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties which may help reduce swelling.
Additionally, it has been known to help prevent gum disease and soothe mouth ulcers. Furthermore, studies have demonstrated that zinc may reduce the symptoms of oral mucositis – a common side effect of chemotherapy or radiation therapy – for those affected.
Sage is primarily composed of the compound thujone, which may cause some adverse effects when taken in large amounts. However, when used responsibly and moderately, sage has been proven safe.
The herb can strengthen the immune system, improve memory and cognitive functioning. It contains antioxidants which shield the nervous system against damage caused by free radicals.
Echinacea
Echinacea, a plant from the daisy family, is often used as an all-natural remedy for sore throats. It contains chemicals which stimulate your immune system and create white blood cells when your body becomes infected with viruses or bacteria.
Echinacea products are often advertised as a remedy for colds and other respiratory illnesses, as well as an antiseptic that speeds up wound healing.
For over 2,000 years, turmeric has been used as a traditional herbal medicine to treat coughs, colds and flu. It may also be beneficial for other types of infections as well.
Echinacea purpurea is the herb and root most often used in preparations, though other species of the plant can have similar benefits. There is no standard dose recommended for echinacea; therefore, be sure to read all product instructions thoroughly and consult your doctor before beginning use.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial properties which can help fight strep throat infections. It also soothes a sore throat and loosens phlegm.
For millennia, ACV has been used as a natural remedy to soothe sore throats. Due to its high acid content, however, it should always be diluted prior to consumption; taking it straight or in large amounts can irritate the esophagus, stomach or GI tract.
Vinegar is made by fermenting fruit juice, in which yeast converts sugar to alcohol and bacteria called Acetobacter transform the alcohol back to acetic acid. Opt for organic vinegar to ensure you’re getting all of the beneficial nutrients and enzymes it contains.
Gargling with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water can be helpful in relieving sore throats. However, dilute the vinegar first by drinking it slowly.
Honey
Honey is one of the best natural treatments for sore throats. It contains antibacterial, antiseptic and antioxidant properties that can reduce pain and swelling caused by a sore throat.
Additionally, it helps to soothe the throat and improve mucus production so you can breathe easier. Furthermore, it provides an excellent source of vitamin C which promotes healing processes.
Raw honey is often infused with small amounts of propolis, a sticky substance created by bees from tree resin that contains antiseptic properties.
In addition to drinking a mixture of warm water and honey, gargling with salt water has antibacterial properties that can help kill germs and ease the pain and inflammation associated with a sore throat. This ancient remedy dates back centuries ago for coughs and sore throats.
